Winter Maintenance for Outboard Motors

2016.06.30

  1. Flush the machine’s water channel. Fill a large bucket with fresh‑water, stand the machine in the bucket, start it and let it idle for 3‑5 minutes for circulation. According to Suzhou Cosc Marine Machinery Co., Ltd., remove the propeller if the unit has no neutral gear.
  2. Fuel draining. For new machines, simply drain the fuel from the carburetor. For used machines, carefully inspect the fuel‑tank filter and carburetor. If conditions permit and you have adequate hands‑on skills, disassemble and clean them thoroughly in gasoline. Long‑term retention of two‑stroke mixed oil inside the carburetor will cause damage; this oil must be completely drained.
  3. Inspect the electrical system. According to Suzhou Cosc Marine Machinery Co., Ltd., focus on the spark plug. Unscrew the spark plug and remove carbon deposits. Soak it in gasoline and wipe it clean. Pour a small amount of two‑stroke engine oil into the cylinder, pull the starter rope gently several times, then reinstall the spark plug.
  4. Gear‑oil replacement. Change the gear oil after the initial 10‑hour running‑in period, and thereafter every 100 operating hours. Remove the gear‑oil screws and allow all old oil to drain out. Inject a small quantity of new gear oil through the upper screw port for flushing. For refilling, squeeze gear oil upward from the lower filler port. Once gear oil flows out from the upper screw opening, tighten the upper screw first, then fasten the lower screw.
  5. According to Suzhou Cosc Marine Machinery Co., Ltd., for machine cleaning: open the engine cover, use gasoline and a brush to clear dust and oil sludge off the engine surface. After thorough cleaning, coat rust‑prone screws with grease, then refit the cover.
  6. The machine tolerates grease well. Apply grease to all applicable components; this will benefit the service life of your equipment.
