Pre‑operation Preparations and Installation Notes for Outboard Motors
2016.06.26
Pre‑operation Preparations for Outboard Motors:
1. Fuel and Engine Oil. According to Suzhou Cosc Side Thrusters, for two‑stroke engines: mix unleaded gasoline and special two‑stroke engine oil thoroughly in the specified ratio, then pour the mixture into the fuel tank. For four‑stroke engines: add unleaded gasoline and four‑stroke engine oil into their respective tanks.
Warning from Suzhou Cosc Side Thrusters: A small amount of fuel may spill when tightening the fuel‑tank cap, resulting in fuel vaporization and minor leakage. When topping‑up engine lubricating oil, select lubricant of the appropriate viscosity. Do not smoke or use open flames nearby. Excessive inhalation of engine exhaust can cause nitric‑oxide poisoning; therefore, never start the engine in an enclosed space.
2. Running‑in. The running‑in period lasts 10 hours. Running‑in is critical for the first use of an outboard motor. Proper running‑in extends engine service life and enables optimum engine performance.
Important Notes to Read Before Mounting an Outboard Motor:
According to Suzhou Cosc Side Thrusters: Many users rush to install their newly‑purchased outboard motors, eager to see the installation result, or simply skip the lengthy instruction manual. Although outboard‑motor installation is relatively straightforward, many points require attention.
1. Suzhou Cosc Side Thrusters reminds users to check the minimum and maximum horsepower limits of the vessel before purchasing an outboard motor. Select an outboard motor within the vessel’s maximum horsepower rating; otherwise unstable operation may lead to capsizing hazards. For vessels without marked engine‑horsepower specifications, consult the manufacturer.
2. Mount the outboard motor at the centre of the transom (measured from outer edges).
3. Mounting height: Maintain a clearance of 30‑50 cm between the anti‑ventilation plate and the bottom of the hull. Once the mounting position is confirmed, tighten all fastening screws. It is recommended to secure the outboard motor to the hull with a safety rope.
4. Prior to trial operation, Suzhou Cosc Side Thrusters advises verifying that the vessel floats correctly at full load and checking the waterline. If the freeboard is too low, wave action may cause water ingress into the cabin. To prevent losses caused by improper operation, please take a few minutes to carefully read all notes before installation.
